Vartani (वर्तनी) means the correct spelling of a word. In SSC Hindi, you are given four words and you have to find the correct one, or you are asked to correct the wrong word. Most mistakes come from the wrong use of the matras ि / ी, ु / ू, the letters श / ष / स and the conjunct letters. Note: "दुरावस्था" is accepted as दुरवस्था (दुर् + अवस्था) in most books. The rows marked (शुद्ध) show the words that are already correct and are often given as an option.
Rules of Hindi Vartani

| Do not use the repeated letter without need | उज्ज्वल (not उज्जवल) |
| Words of English origin follow the sound | डॉक्टर, कॉलेज, ऑफिस |
Tricks
- The word "कवयित्री" is formed from कवि + यित्री. Remember "कवि" and "कवयित्री" together.
- "परीक्षा" has a long ई after प, because the root is परि + ईक्षा.
- Remember "आशीर्वाद" as आशीः + वाद = आशीर्वाद (the र comes before व).
- For words with श, ष, स, say the word slowly and think of its root.
