Highway engineering deals with the planning, design and construction of roads. SSC JE civil papers ask for the road classification, geometric design formulas and the standard tests on aggregates and bitumen.
Classification of Roads
| Class | Examples | Note |
|---|---|---|
| National Highways (NH) | Connect states and major cities | Under the Centre; NHAI formed in 1988 |
| State Highways (SH) | Connect districts and NH | Under the State |
| Major District Roads (MDR) | Connect production areas and markets | Nagpur Plan 1943 classification |
| Other District Roads (ODR) | Connect rural areas | – |
| Village Roads (VR) | Connect villages | – |
Geometric Design
- Camber: the cross slope given to drain rainwater. Bituminous roads need 1 in 50 to 1 in 30 and cement concrete roads about 1 in 60 to 1 in 50.
- Superelevation: e + f = V²/(127R), where V is in km/h, R is in m and f is the coefficient of lateral friction (0.15). Maximum e is 7 percent in plains and 10 percent in hilly areas.
- Stopping Sight Distance: SSD = 0.278Vt + V²/(254f), where t = 2.5 s is the reaction time.
- Overtaking Sight Distance is larger than SSD.
- Standard lane width is 3.75 m for a single lane.
Pavements and Tests
| Pavement | Material / Feature |
|---|---|
| Flexible | Bituminous layers over granular layers; load spreads gradually |
| Rigid | Cement concrete slab; carries load by slab action |
| Test | Purpose |
|---|---|
| CBR (California Bearing Ratio) | Strength of subgrade |
| Los Angeles Abrasion | Hardness or toughness of aggregate |
| Aggregate Impact | Toughness of aggregate |
| Penetration test | Hardness or grade of bitumen |
| Marshall Stability | Design of bituminous mixes |
Solved Example
SSD for V = 60 km/h, f = 0.35, t = 2.5 s: 0.278 × 60 × 2.5 = 41.7 m and 60²/(254 × 0.35) = 40.5 m. SSD ≈ 82.2 m.
Quick Tips
- Keep V in km/h and R in metres in the superelevation formula.
- CBR is for subgrade and Marshall is for bituminous mix.
- Remember Nagpur Plan 1943.
- The penetration test tells the grade of bitumen.
Quick Revision Points
- Camber is for drainage.
- e + f = V²/(127R).
- SSD uses reaction time 2.5 s.
- CBR measures subgrade strength.
- Penetration test is for bitumen.
- LA abrasion is for aggregates.
