How SSC Salary Is Calculated

Your SSC salary is not just the "Basic Pay" shown in the exam notification. The actual monthly credit — your in-hand salary — is built from several allowances, minus a few mandatory deductions:

Gross Salary = Basic Pay + Dearness Allowance (DA) + House Rent Allowance (HRA) + Transport Allowance (TA)
In-Hand Salary = Gross Salary − NPS Contribution − CGHS/CGEGIS Deductions

Components of SSC Salary Explained

Dearness Allowance (DA): A cost-of-living adjustment revised twice a year (January and July) by the Government, calculated as a percentage of Basic Pay.

House Rent Allowance (HRA): Depends on the city you're posted in — 24% of Basic Pay for X-category (metro) cities, 16% for Y-category cities, and 8% for Z-category (other) locations.

Transport Allowance (TA): A fixed monthly amount that also carries DA on top of it, meant to cover commuting costs. It is higher for employees posted in higher Transport Allowance cities.

NPS Deduction: Under the New Pension Scheme, 10% of (Basic Pay + DA) is deducted every month and matched by the Government towards your retirement corpus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the in-hand salary of an SSC CGL selected candidate?

It depends on the post and pay level allotted — in-hand salary typically ranges from around ₹25,000 for Tax Assistant (Level 4) to over ₹55,000 for Assistant Audit Officer (Level 8), after standard deductions and depending on the city of posting.

Does SSC salary include Dearness Allowance?

Yes. DA is added on top of Basic Pay and is revised periodically by the Government based on inflation, so your gross salary keeps increasing even without a promotion.

How much HRA do SSC employees get?

HRA depends on your city of posting: 24% of Basic Pay in X-category (metro) cities, 16% in Y-category cities, and 8% in Z-category (other) locations.

Is NPS applicable to SSC employees?

Yes, employees who joined Central Government service on or after 1 January 2004 are covered under the National Pension System (NPS), with 10% of Basic Pay + DA deducted monthly.
